Marketing and Information Sharing

The goal of this project is to help spread information about the South Hadley Food Pantry and Garden to places such as the local high school and various local businesses. Working alongside the knowledgeable staff and volunteers at the garden and pantry, by creating initiatives that will help spread information and make communication easier and more effective.

Some of these ideas are:

  • Creating an official name for the garden which is Full Circle Garden

  • Creating an instagram account for the garden

  • Developing a joint email for all staff communication needs

  • Creating a website

  • Designing flyers to be distributed to the local schools and to various local businesses

This will help by increasing awareness of the garden and all it has to offer will allow motivated volunteers to help keep the dream of the South Hadley Food Pantry and Garden going and growing, continually supplying those in need nutritious food.

Nutrition Education and Connecting Clients to the Food from the Garden

This project is taking on the responsibility of educating the staff and clients at the Hadley Food Pantry on nutrition. Firstly, they created and printed some surveys that clients could fill out. Then they will analyze the data from the responses to the surveys, which will help determine how the clients feel about the food pantry and all it has to offer. This will help determine what foods the clients like best, and consequently what would make sense to grow in the garden. Another way that they are actively teaching about nutrition and connecting clients to food from the garden is bringing in simple, nutrient dense sample meals and the recipes to them so that clients can recreate them. They are using recipes that make use of vegetables that are in season and available, as well as food stuffs that the pantry offers. They will also be dropping off and handing out educational pamphlets, which will help the clients read nutrition labels, take portion size into account, and better understand nutrients.

Food Production and Agricultural Aspects

This project responsible for the food production and agricultural aspects of the garden itself. They hope to be able enable grapes to be grown in the garden. This could be made possible by the simple addition of a grape arbor to an already existing fence. Another idea is to plant a few cherry and apple trees in an unused area behind the garden. This would help to fill the growing demand for fresh fruit from the garden with the idea of planting grapes, apples, and cherries; as after a few years, they would provide an abundance of fresh fruit with minimal effort. Since it is too late in the season to plant any fruit trees or grapes, are focusing on the planning portion, so the ground can be planted as soon as it thaws.
